Companion
I saw this movie. This movie I saw. I liked this movie. This movie a lot.
it’s a great horror comedy film! Do not watch the trailer if you haven’t already as it gives away one of the major twists.
I will begin to do just that in the next few sentences so BEWARE!
This film follows a couple played by Sophie Thatcher, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite new actors, and Jack Quaid, of yes those Quaids, as they go to a cabin in the woods for a retreat for the weekend which goes badly. SOUND FAMILIAR??
Sophie is sexually harassed by the host of the weekend away and in self-defense kills him. Everyone freaks out but also not because of turns out she’s a robot and this was all part of the plan to get this wealthy Russian’s (the host I Russian by the way) heap of cashola.
Sophie is told she’s a robot and she freaks out and runs into the woods hijinks ensue and people die.
ITS A GOOD TIME PEOPLE!
A really strong supporting cast in the film. A stand out is Harvey Guillén as one half of a couple who is invited on the outing but gets in over their head.
I love when characters bite off more than they can chew, I love people trapped at a location, I love seeing a beautiful woman kill a bunch of people who have wronged her I do not, despite everything I just listed, like Kill Bill. But, I love Companion.
Jack Quaid is pitch-perfect in his portrayal of an absolute dickhead. Just the worst sort of annoying guy that made me think of a bunch of people with whom I am no longer friends, one of whom also looks like Jack - sorry Jack! You look like a dickhead I once knew. Sophie is incredible as someone who finds her own self-worth for the first time and as a character dealing with her identity, truly a performer to watch.
it’s a fun time with great gags, deaths, and acting all around. It has some interesting if mundane things to say about AI and how we use it.
I’d recommend you see it while you can!
The runtime is 97 minutes.
