Four Weddings And A Funeral
I really relate with Charlie as someone who also looks good in a loud shirt.
I’ve seen this movie so many times and had forgotten how much I love it.
I grew up watching so many rom-coms growing up with my mum or alone in the middle of the afternoon after completing schoolwork for the day that it’s not surprising that I turned out the way I have.
Four Weddings was one such movie.
I haven’t seen it in years and like catching up with an old friend with whom I shared a childhood, the memories came flooding back when I watched it this past month.
Four Weddings And A Funeral is a romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and written by Richard Curtis. It follows Charlie, played by Grant, a young man who can’t seem to get much right with his life as over the course of a year attends, you guessed it, four weddings and a funeral. He meets a woman, Carrie, played by Andie MacDowell, at the first wedding and falls in love with her more or less.
I won’t get too deep into it as the film is a comedy and the more explain it the less fun it is, but one of the titular weddings is Carrie’s.
Hugh is someone that I’ve always liked but now I think I fully understand the appeal of. He’s fantastic in this film (also Heretic, (a film I will also be writing about) playing a bundle of nervese, how nervous is this bundle? So nervous he can’t get anything right! In the first wedding he’s the ring barrier (a real Frodo if you will) and forgets the rings and this is the look on his face when he realzies what he’s done, or failed to do rather.
The pain in his eyes is just incredible.
This film is incredibly well written, featuring a delightful cast of side characters that all feel fully realized. The actors played them to perfection with warmth and familairity with each other, but you also get the sense of a shared history, that there are things some of these folks have had to move past with each other. Really incredible stuff from the whole team!
Watch this movie, it’s perfect or whatever. I love Love and I love watching beautiful people fall in love and make jokes.
The runtime is 117 minutes
PS: this is the shirt I referenced in the subtitle.
